Okay, so i recently got more RAM (SCORE!!). after i turned off my com and put in the RAM stick and restarted it i got a message saying that i will need to reactivate windows because the hard ware drastically changed(yeah right! it was only 256 more RAM!). I tried to activate it, it said to type that 25 letter/number product key. so i did that, but it said it was incorrect! i tried it 3 more times and guess what? no luck! So now i need some help. i will try to reactivate it tonight by phone. But please guys help! it said i ONLY have 3 days before i MUST reactivate it or it will refuse to work. and any ways(!) why would i need to reactivate windows just because i got more RAM? i don't understand!

Simple: Now you are experiencing the reasons why everyone thinks that the executives at Microsoft are a**holes.

You can't do anything about it. But reactivating over phone should actually work flawlessly.

I did a activation by phone. It was very easy and fast (for support, of course)
And it was successful. Your mom doesn't need to worry

When i've upgraded the RAM it didn't require me an activation

Maybe because you are running Windows XP? Windows XP is not as bad as Vista in these issues IIRC. You have to consider that some years ago there were attempts to implement a very strict > Trusted Computing implementation in any sold computer system. At this time Vista was just in development.
We can be glad that these TC efforts didn't get through as bad as planned or we couldn't run "unallowed" software or hardware at all.

You can always install another operating system. No need to buy a new computer. Everything software related can always be fixed

For example, you can check eBay for cheap copies of Windows XP (and Vista).

If everything else fails, you can also download a copy of a free operating system (for example > Ubuntu Linux). Although many games don't work, you can still get online and do normal work with it. This should help you out until you get your hands on a copy of Windows.

Have you tried calling your vendor and explaining him your problem? Maybe you can get a new copy of your OS.

Are there any other OS's that are free that you can direct me to?

i will do a google search later.

And can you give me more information on having more than one OS installed at a time? like how do i pick the OS i want to use. And any other info you want me to know or think i should know. Thanks dicker! you have been a great help in my time of need!

More than one OS installed works fine most of the time. I, myself, have Ubuntu ( a linux distribution ) and windows xp installed, they both work fine.

Ubuntu has to be the best distro of Linux out there
1) It is completely free
2)They ship it to your door free in 2 weeks
3)Incredible community support if anything goes wrong

Plus if your mom is worried about losing files, just boot with Ubuntu and look through the files on your old hard drive.

Personally though, I resort to more...devious ways of running Windows

I hope activation keys isn't needed for all RAM upgrades on the market.
That'd be really annoying, please don't tell me that there is.
