So my job has a deal where they pay for 80% of a laptop and you pat the remaining 20%. Currently I'm on a 15" MacBook Pro non retina. To me, the screen looks more than good enough.

The thinness of the retina MacBooks looks very appealing to me, but i can get a much better computer internal components wise for the price with a non retina display.

At work I have my my current MacBook hooked up to an external display, with the screen on the MacBook only being used for Outlook and referencing mockups. At home, I will use the MacBook as a secondary computer since I recently built a decent gaming rig.

So, those with retina MacBooks - do you think your purchase was worth the extra cost?

If I were looking for a laptop, I'd search for laptops that have a high GPU clockrate, lots of ram and a fast CPU.

Not "high definition retina display" bullshit.

That's pretty much none of the Apple laptops.

Are you an artist who is forced to work on a laptop instead of working on a desktop PC with decent monitor (or: the case that user Hador mentioned)? Then go ahead and buy a Mac Book with retina display. It's probably the best choice for you then.

For all other cases you'll find better laptops for less money.

It really depends on what you need but it's no secret that Apple products are totally overpriced. And price still matters even if you just pay 20%.

I'd buy a iMac personally, they're pretty cool and I've tested some of them. I learned that Apple products were actually quite amazing while I were in college (quite some time ago). They costed approximately 1,857.82 EUR, each machine that is. They're pretty much worth the money, and if your unsatisfied with it. Just download VirtualBox and install any of your favorite Windows OS's as a Virtual PC. Else do as you wish, go with the gut feeling when picking a computer. I am not here to tell you what PC you shall buy it's entirely your decision. However if I were to pick, it'd be a iMac for sure. Not just only in memory of Steve Jobs but also due to the great OS.

It really depends on what you use it for. People who buy it just because it looks 'nice' or because it's just from Apple are the ones that give Apple fan-boys a bad name.

If you buy a product because of it's specifications or features/functions, it's justified.

Retina is a nice touch, and I highly recommend it.

The basic iMac model is worth 1,299 EUR.
Also, you can install Windows using Bootcamp, an Apple application for installing Windows.

@user omg: I don't get you people. I can play Skyrim and Crysis 2 and any other game on Great or Ultra on my iMac, and it's just the basic iMac. The worst specs of all iMacs.
A question to all the people who say macs suck/their specs are horrible: have you even used or owned one?
